چکیده

A very wide range of finite element analyses required to design carbodies calls for quadrilateral meshes with austere quality needs. Quadrilaterals being varying strain and non-planar, element quality, in body-in-white analyses, is virtually impossible to measure with a single parameter. Auto-designers mostly prefer heuristic element quality metrices that catapult the need for predominantly orthogonal meshes. Transfinite or “mapped” meshing thus assumes great importance. The present investigation presents a holistic transfinite meshing approach for body-inwhite analyses involving groups of tessellated faces. A new corner detection algorithm is proposed. The concept of “pseudo-edges” is introduced to cluster face edges into four logical sides. “pseudo-edge-clans” are next formed for the purpose of count propagation that does not require traditional LP solves. In the meshing process, we use 2D domain generation from a 3D tessellation at two steps. During corner determination we use a least squares conformal map with free boundaries to find boundary angles in 2D. After pseudo edges are identified, 2D domain for meshing a face is generated using a constrained rectangular boundary. In this second use of our domain generation method, we make use of a mapping type parameter which varies from conformal (angle preserving) solution to an authalic (area preserving) map. Based on practical examples, the best value for the mapping type parameter for the second domain generation step was found to be about 0.7. We present several results to illustrate our process of meshing for body-in-white analyses.

High Quality Bi-Linear Transfinite Meshing with Interior Point Constraints

For a variety of structural finite element analyses on automotive body panels, aerospace wings and space satellite panels, highquality, structured quadrilateral meshing is imperative. Transfinite meshing, the technique to produce such meshes is severely infringed by the presence of surface-interior point constraints. The present paper attempts to solve the inverse problem of transfinite meshing...

An Art Gallery approach to submap meshing

The Art Gallery Theorem and its lemmas have been used since the 1990s in the area of computer graphics to decompose orthogonal polygons into convex sub-regions. This paper extends and improvises Art Gallery concepts to non-orthogonal, generic polygons to perform a multiblock decomposition of faces into a set of maximal, single-loop, convex sub-faces. Concepts such as staircase, dent and notch a...

Automatic Hexahedral Sweep Mesh Generation of Open Volumes

Open volumes with partial surface geometry are often encountered in the industry while modifying or morphing legacy meshes or while creating meshes in structural recesses or void regions. The paper describes an algorithm for auto-generating hexahedral meshes on these open volumes without the need for laborious CAD repairs. Based on the available input, the open volumes are first topologically c...

Flattening 3D Triangulations for Quality Surface Mesh Generation

A method of flattening 3D triangulations for use in surface meshing is presented. The flattening method supports multiple boundary loops and directly produces planar locations for the vertices of the triangulation. The general nonlinear least-square fit condition for the triangle vertices includes conformal (angle preserving) and authalic (area preserving) conditions as special cases. The metho...

Meshing by successive superelement decomposition (MSD) - A new approach to quadrilateral mesh generation

An automatic two-dimensional mesh generation scheme based on superelement decomposition technique is presented. The proposed approximate skeletal method (ASM) uses shape interrogation techniques on simplified geometric representation of the shape boundary to generate non-intersecting, topologically simple and mappable superelements. A recursive mesh generation scheme, meshing by successive deco...
